The lock has stopped catching, the key jams, or the handle has broken
A door not locking or closing properly, a broken handle, a jamming key: three descriptions of the same component. It is also the component this climate works on hardest. Salt significantly increases the conductivity of water, so galvanic effects are normally more severe near the coast, and Cairns averages 72 percent relative humidity at 9am, rising to around 78 percent from February through April. A screen door that will not lock has quietly stopped doing the one thing it was bought for. The Queensland Police Service notes that most break-ins are opportunistic, especially where there is evidence of quick and easy entry, and its advice to keep screen doors locked is worth nothing if the lock does not catch. The repair is either the cylinder or the complete lock. What goes back in is checkable: the standard asks for at least a five pin cylinder or an equivalent system, a key that will not come out unless the door is deadlocked, and tamper resistant fasteners where they can be reached from outside. Locksets and hardware also carry a corrosion requirement, a neutral salt spray test of 240 hours, which was new in the 2023 edition and was never required of hardware specified under the older ones. If it is the triple lock that has failed, that is the same thing as a three point lock, securing the door at top, middle and bottom, and the national industry body treats it as standard equipment on a compliant door rather than an add on. The PERFGUARD hinged and sliding doors in our own range were tested with three point locking hardware, so it is not vocabulary invented for the repair conversation.
